Stray cat big wound behind ear?

My mum found a stray cat he had a big wound behind his ear it's bloody and it's very big it's not a cut which vet's used to show they're 'fixed' it's a wound she's says he wasn't involved in a fight anyway dio you have asn idea of what might be? mum says she thinks it's a cancer is it true?
