Gen. George Patton - What event had a great effect upon his personality, reputation, standards, etc.?
The slapping incident. In 1943 in Sicily,Patton slapped two soldiers in th face for what he thought was malingering and cowardice. It is not acceptable in American society or even in the Army for officers to slap enlisted soldiers. The reaction in the newspapers, amongst the civilian population, and in the Army itself was severe.Eisenhower thought Patton might quit the Army.Patton did not quit and despite being humbled and ostracized he achieved greater success.General Bradley said the soldiers Patton slapped back in Sicily did more to win the war than any other privates in the Army. The episode only strengthened Patton's resolve and contributed to his triumph as commander of the Third Army in France and Germany.I recommend you watch the movie Patton and read the book Patton:Ordeal and Triumph by Ladislas Farago for insight into Patton's personality and character.
