In a research paper, how to you cite your quotes, paraphrases, etc.?

Last time I did a research paper, I had to use the last name of the author, and put a page number. The examples our professor have: "the quote" (n.pag.) WHAT IS THAT??? I only have online sources. Can someone PLEASE HELP ME??? (a couple of the quotes have a page number, but I don't think they are online sources.
